I like FF VIII.

Alex! I highlighted each individual "I" in that "FF VIII" with my cursor a dozen times because I knew I had to be seeing one extra somehow. Surely mine eyes dothed decevied me! Haha

But that's fine; nobody's perfect. You still have otherwise exceptional taste in retro games. And, you know, aside from the, ahem, few... minor quibbles I mention in my very fair and objective list, I had no real issues with the game either😁

Haha!

I’m not offended. I just wanted to pretend I was.

I’m old enough to have gotten in on FF from game one, but this was the first PS FF I played, and I think I enjoyed it so much because I was a teenager. It’s a flawed game, character and plot-wise, but I liked the junction system and a lot of the other changes. It took risks and was different. FF VII to me is very overrated and mechanics-wise is less complex than some of the SNES games. VIII was new and while the writing was suspect, overall I think it’s good that Square used to take wild chances.

This is why I liked X and XII so much. Even X-2, at least gameplay-wise. I haven’t played any FF past XII, but I appreciate that Square uses the series as license to experiment. If I want tried-and-true JRPGs, there’s always my beloved Dragon Quest series.

I didn't play ff8 I loved the under appreciated ff9 and Chrono trigger to death

You dodged a bullet with FF8. I got every damn item, every stupid weapon, everything, in that disastrous game just so when I bashed it no one could tell me I hadn't given it a fair shake haha

Chrono Trigger, however, was indeed infinitely excellent! One of my top-10 games of all time. Mitsuda's soundtrack alone puts it in legendary status. An absolute masterclass when it released, and it definitely has passed the test of time, to coin a phrase.

People still talk about it today. It has everything that most games today are missing. Real plot character development, a great premise. I liked the legend of dragoon too even though it was hokey AF

Im only surprised you didn't mention the crappy gil earning system. Ff8 was better than ffx2 though(outfit changes midbattle as a mechanic was beyond stupid)

FFX2 was such garbage! haha

I hated that teen-gal-dress-up doll "battle system" so much, god that was indeed beyond stupid.

And now you mention it, I'd swear I used to have section in there about the shitty "allowance" system where you get a paycheck every week from SEED Inc. for your hard work running around drawing Ultimas from Adamantoises and completing inane fetch quests. It was like a worse version of the Mother "allowance" system, which at least made more sense in context of the game world and wasn't nearly as clunky and annoying. On one hand, I want to thank you for pointing that out... on the other hand you have undone years of therapy by reminding me of the that trauma haha

Lmao, well a good troll knows the job is done when they trigger someone, so I'm sorry, your welcome and (in the voice and style of Nelson from the Simpsons) Ha Ha.

“Predator was a more compelling love story.” 😂😂😂

Despite being late to start gaming about 20 years ago (and then only on PC), and never having played any of the franchise besides FFXIV, this made me actually laugh out loud as few things do. It also makes me glad I never played VIII. Hilarious.

Thank you! I'm glad you got a good laugh from this😂 And that you never had to suffer through the execrable FFVIII :D

That reminded me I need to log in to FFXIV today so I don’t lose my house. I have millions of gil invested in my property lol. Haven’t played much since my best friend died a few years ago, though. =/ When I find time for gaming these days, it’s usually Destiny 2, but I swear Bungie is doing everything possible to piss off fans of the game. I think I need to find something new. Any recs?

Holy moley, I just realized I somehow missed this reply! I am so sorry. Your comment aged like fine wine tho, esp regarding Bungie. Very different games, but lately I've been playing anything from Games Kitchen or Nomada Studios. They are absolutely crushing it.

I'm glad you stumbled across it, because I completely forgot I even asked! 😂

No apology necessary, son of Zeus. Life is full and busy. I would not take it personally even if it hadn't fallen out of my head.

I am, however, very happy for the recs! It's been a while since I've even logged into D2 to indulge my masochistic impulses.

I really like Squall, but find this list hilarious, you really do despise FF8

Expand full comment

I do! lol But my extreme enmity with FF8 has become a bit of a running gag over the years, so it's all in good fun. I appreciate you giving this a read regardless and having a good sense of humor about it ;)

Expand full comment

Oh I gotcha, that's pretty hilarious, honestly the fact that all the character were from FF8 made me laugh. I won't lie, I may not have agreed with the list but I could not help but chortle throughout.

And you're welcome, it is rather funny that though I like Leon/Squall and you dislike him that we can both share a laugh at his expense. I think that's so much more important than some twenty some year old game.

lol were all those screenshots bad on purpose?

Expand full comment

Ha! Nice try, old bean, but you have to get up pretty early in the morning to get one over ol' Apollo! (I am the sun, after all.) That was a trick question: everyone knows there *are* no good screenshots of FF8 because the whole game is bad!

(But, yes, each pic was purposely chosen for a specific effect or gag.)

Has anyone updated the Wikipedia page on Japanese War Crimes to include FF 8? If not, I feel like that needs to happen.

Expand full comment

Funny you should mention that!

Top secret documents revealed that the dev team for Final Fantasy 8 was constituted almost entirely of infamous Unit 731 personnel. Despite the team initially being celebrated and controversially enshrined at Yasukuni Jinja's war memorial for their efforts on behalf of the Imperial Army, they were later removed from the shrine after then-prime minister Keizo Obuchi learned of their involvement in creating FF8.

Obuchi was reported to have been so mortified upon playing through the first few hours of FF8 that he spilled his green tea and exclaimed: "Project PX and Maruta would have been a mercy compared to this torture, this crime against humanity! This fluffy-collared boy! His vacant stare shall torment me the rest of my days! These developers have brought an unforgiveable shame upon the nation and people of Japan. The world will never forgive us, but we must do the honorable thing regardless: strike their accursed names from every monument!"

Tragically, history would prove Obuchi correct. The world never forgave Japan for the atrocity they unleashed in FF8, and it continues to digitally traumatize untold innocents across the globe to this day, like some worse version of The Ring curse. I can only do my small part here in hopes of mitigating that damage so future generations shall not have to suffer as I have.

Squall and Rinoa's tepid romance is one of the most shoe-horned and poorly forced things I've seen in an RPG, but I'd still have to put Zell above both of them. I absolutely could not stand that fucker. I'll also say that if I was going to make my own list it would pretty much be the entire cast of FFXIII. FFVIII is... very flawed, but I don't think I've ever disliked or been as disappointed in a game as much as FFXIII.

Expand full comment

Haha very fair take on Zell. He is absolutely terrible. It was splitting pointing polygon hairs deciding where to rank some of these goobers. Luckily for me, after the Year of Great Disappointment (1999) shattering my faith in my beloved franchises--thanks to FF8 AND Phantom Menace--FF13 couldn't really hurt me anymore lol

You were fortunate to be innoculated because I would say that FFXIII is probably the worst game in the franchise. I was actually too young to play FFVIII when it released, and my first game in the series was X, which also had its flaws, especially looking back at it (I can't believe there was ever a time I managed to take Tidus seriously) but I still think it was one of the better installments in the franchise. I went back and played some other the others after and I didn't love or hate FFVIII so I was still expecting decent things from FFXIII. I don't think I've ever been so wrong about any piece of media before or sense.

This breakdown is why I stopped playing video games after my Tony Hawk phase. I just couldn't anymore. I still can't get into them. Do you remember Wizards and Warriors from the old Nintendo? I don't know if I spent more time on that, Tetris, Mario bros, or Zelda but I'm thinking Wizards and Warriors. That game was hard bc you had to always start over and beat yourself, like Tetris.

Expand full comment

I loved Tony Hawk! I am still reigning, local "Horse" champion in THPS 2 and 3. Kick flip to manual to string those combos together lol. Custom character creation was so dope. And the soundtracks were fire! Public Enemy, CKY... so many bangers.

And you just rattled off a murderer's row there! Tertis, Mario, Zelda... all classics that built the Nintendo Empire. And I did play Wizards and Warriors! That game was hard as hell lol. Back in the day they didn't give a shit: had to restart all the time, super unfair sections, glitches... and games weren't that popular so it was just a bunch of kids getting traumatized and no one cared haha. Wizards of Warrior II did kick it up a notch though with that sweet Fabio cover.
