I'm sure Drake's week isn't going any better than how Courtney Love felt after that Trent Reznor's "I play a game, it's called insincerity" song on The Fragile--although, lately I've been bringing up NIN references in everything. What can I say, it's my perfect drug!
I am not lying when I say that the NFL plan sounds more credible (not to mention, safe and effective!) than most of public policy. At least, I think there's a lot of truth to the notion that many people will simply not care about anything apart from their bread-and-circuses type of entertainment. This is part of the reason why I find "we can't even *empathize* with people far away 'cuz we have so many problems at home!11!" (courtesy of our friends Mr. Dave N'Busters and Chobani ;) to be an unconvincing excuse, especially when it's coming from people who'll spend hours talking about Lily Philips or something. And inb4 da Newmanoids, I'm not saying that one shouldn't spend any time on what's fun/trivial/entertaining (I watched 10 Cobra Kai episodes today), but the doublespeak kills me.
P.S. I will never not love the "not yet a woman" preamble you add before a short piece hahaha. I am an American football neophyte (yes, I pay more attention to the footb- I mean "soccer" World Cup, I'm sorry!), but as usual you have the ability to digest inaccessible topics in something even someone like me can comprehend! There might be hope after all.
P.P.S. Also, *I* remember Andrew Yang, AND I knew of Tulsi Gabbard back in '20! Don't I get a prize for being a goffik?! ;)
Thank you so much! I always appreciate the thoughtful comments : )
Courtney and Drake, good grief, what sad team. My first thought is that they are the Team Rocket of music with that string of hilarious Ls, but Jesse, James, and Meowth are actually likeable and funny, so it'd be doing Team Rocket a disservice to liken them to those two clowns.
It's never a bad time for a reference to our pal Crybaby Trent! I'd say that reference was "right where it belongs."
And--hand on the Necronomicon--I sincerely believe that the plan I lay out here, though the presentation is perhaps a tad jocular, would work. It clearly requires some refinement, but it would work. It would motivate people. It would save America. Society is a Skinner Box, whether I like or not. Unless it is dismantled, the best we can do is be the ones setting the parameters for positive and negative reinforcement. And in this case, everyone would win with minimum punishment or coercion. I just need to figure out how to actually implement it. A minor detail, of course!
I try to maintain a certain "optimsitic pragmatism." I try to call balls and strikes, regardless of if I like what (or whom) it concerns. Regardless of how ugly or beautiful, terrible or terrific, unwelcome or welcome that truth may be. I truly want the best for everyone (by their own metrics, not mine... within reason ;) to push for positive outcomes, whether that be through change or continuinty. In this case, I really think "NFL Metro" (as I just now dubbed this idea!) would work to greatly improve people's lives based on the reality of human nature and the reality of our current situation.
Legit lol'ing at that DnB Chobani throwback! Lordy, are those guys exquisitely vociferous dunces haha. Those types will indeed spend more pixels than a Google warehouse on articles feigning bristled-mustachio-and-monocle'd indignation when it suits them, then turn around and attempt to lollingly harrangue those pesky betas about empathy and attention. C'est la vida loca, as they say in... no one says that. :/
"...you have the ability to digest inaccessible topics in something even someone like me can comprehend..." Though you are being far too modest here haha, I do appreciate the very gracious sentiment. As part of that evergreen quality, I do try to write in such a way that--especially if they don't mind clicking a few dozen of the hyperlinks I scatter around like little Easter eggs haha--anyone can pick up the article and understand the topic and my perspective. Even soccer fans! And I'm glad someone enjoys my running gag with Britney.
And I totally agree, we all are going to--maybe need to--spend time on frivolity (Not that Cobra Kai is frivolous; that is quality!), but it is indeed the doublespeak that is galling.
You 'member Yang and Tulsi!? That is absolutely prize-worthy! 200 Pythia Points awarded to Ophelia! :D
Courtney, Drake, and even Yoko Ono (and on that note, here's Bill Burr skewering her: https://youtu.be/VD7-WHB8CBY) could well comprise... okay, I will admit that typing out that sentence had me search up "villain trios in media" and I couldn't find any result that actually represents that L-Cubed trio--and I don't even actively dislike them!
If you ran with NFL Metro as a policy, I might actually vote in 2028 (or '32, '36, etc) to save America (even vote a few times to save democracy! ;). As a sidenote, I do find myself pondering if this proposal may be overestimating people's abilities to respond to rational incentive structures (the Stanford Marshmallow test comes to mind, and there are too many overgrown children). I think it might be likely that negative reinforcement ("no soup- I mean Superbowl for you!") results in, er, fiery but mostly peaceful protests ... but that's just, like, my opinion, man!
I'm glad to add some levity to my ramblings with that DnB Chobani throwback! One of my long-standing stances has been that the right's (of course not everyone) habit of throwing "gay and retarded" on everything isn't really all that different from the left's habit of throwing "problematic and violent microaggression" on everything; both spurn dissenting viewpoints, after all. Of course, this could go into a whole discussion on the Shadow Masculine and Feminine, along with whether there's a horseshoe phenomenon going on there... especially if we take Ares to represent the former, and Aphrodite to represent the latter––as much as their domains appear diametrically opposed, both have a tendency to foment chaos or revel in it (contrast both with Athena). But I'm just musing at this point, I could well be out of my mind!
Now that I think of it, Pythia Points would be a great way to implement NFL Metro :D
Also, I felt disappointed in the broad generalizations made in this post. You’ve lost me for a reader as a result.
Americans are extraordinarily diverse and hard to label. Texas alone is the size of France and contains within it the most diverse city in the world, the largest Vietnamese population outside of Vietnam, dedicated rock climbing national parks, liberal, high tech companies, NASA, some of the largest gay pride celebrations, side by side with mega churches and oil refineries. As disappointed as I feel in my country right now, I could never demonize my entire population-in fact it’s one of the reasons why I’m here on Substack. I personally don’t watch American football but I am a poet, a chef of French and Asian cuisine, a lover of art, education, travel and teaching. I know a great many Americans who do not fit the description you gave to portray us all as just one vile stereotype. Please consider the harm a post like this does to further dehumanize Americans at a time when an autocrat and his billionaire buddies are dismantling our country from the inside while destroying our humanity. Americans are protesting everyday in every state and we have broken the phone lines in Congress with our call volume to our representatives. We need more humanity at this time, not less.
Fuck the NFL and fuck rap hiphop along with all pop culture since at least 1945 if not 1865 if not 1005.. These retards are all blasphemous muckleheads profaning everything good wholesome and holy. Excommunicate them all now before they annihilate us with their nastiness.

Even with those incentives the Cleveland browns would remain a perennial trash dumpster fire team
Hahaha! This is true and a metaphysical certitude. It also gives me an excuse to share two of my favorite videos:

We need more humour at this time, not less. 😘
Right? Forget the four humours, a lot of people don't even have one! :D

I have to admit, pop music *has* been going downhill since the early 11th century.
